Compassion, trust & understanding.

People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons. You might be feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed and not sure how to cope. You may be bereaved, struggling with a relationship, family issues, a loss of income, or finding it hard to believe in yourself.

Sometimes life throws changes at us, unexpected trauma, a separation, illness and it can feel unsettling or even frightening. You might feel stuck, unsure of where you’re going, weighed down by past experiences, or worried about the future.

Counselling offers a gentle and confidential space to talk openly at your own pace. You don’t need to have all the answers, or even know exactly what’s wrong. Together we can explore your feelings and emotions and help you to find ways to feel more at ease and hopeful again. Counselling offers someone to listen, so you feel heard and someone beside you so you don’t feel alone.

My name is Lorna Knott and I am a qualified Person-Centered Counsellor, combining specialist skills in Therapeutic Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), working together with you to help you understand patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours — and to find ways forward that feel right for you.

Life can feel overwhelming at times, and it’s not always easy to talk to family or friends. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, self-esteem, bereavement, or simply feeling stuck, I’m here to listen with deep empathy and to support you in making sense of what you’re experiencing, in a warm, comfortable and non judgemental space.

I offer in person face-to -face, online and telephone sessions.

I am a registered member of COSCA (Counselling & Psychotherapy in Scotland) and the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).

What to expect during a counselling session

The basis of counselling is to create the right environment for you to explore your own thoughts and feelings safely and honestly, in order to grow and heal. To understand and gently reflect on what issues and challenges you are finding hard just now.

Spending up to an hour in a comfortable therapy room so you can relax and have some space to talk and think. As a therapist I will listen with deep empathy and care and without judgement to understand your feelings, no matter what you say or feel.

Person Centered counselling is non directive and my job would be to gently support you though the process. There is no agenda, you decide what you want to talk about and the pace and direction comes from you. Together we can discover your own feelings and meanings, rather than steering you toward a particular conclusion.

Silence is okay, so are tears, laughter and confusion, all is welcome.

If you’d like a more structured approach then we could include other therapies  such as CBT which includes a more directive framework we would work on together, but that is entirely up to you. I also use Mindfulness exercises if anxiety is present and overwhelming.

Any form of healing needs a good relationship. We can learn every modality in psychotherapy but if the client and counsellor relationship is not right it just won’t work. So I work hard on building trust with unconditional positive regard and honesty. Taking it slowly so you feel supported every step of the way.
